The Artist

Biography
Saje Mistry is a contemporary painter based in Ontario, Canada. She works between abstraction and remembered image, building surfaces slowly in acrylics, oil, soft pastels and other mixed media until a painting arrives at the point where it can no longer be argued with. Her work is held with private collectors across Canada, the United States and over seas.
Statement
"I’m drawn to the little things that stay with you — a colour from a room you used to live in, the grey of a lake in October, the feeling of a place you haven’t been in years. I’m not trying to paint the memory exactly as it was. I’m more interested in what’s left behind."
Practice
Each painting begins with a ground built up over several days, then reduced. Layers are scraped back as often as they are added, leaving a record of the decisions underneath. Large ribbons of colour layer over the work and underneath to present a state of flow.
